A Bavarian monk, Father Sebastian Kneipp did much for the re-popularization of hydrotherapy in the 19th century. Hydrotherapy is performed in baths, saunas, douches, wraps, and packs. It is used for the treatment of illnesses thanks its mechanical and/or thermal effects.
The recuperative and healing properties of hydrotherapy are good for the body's reaction to hot and cold stimuli, to the use of heat, to pressure produced by the water and to the obtained sensation. The impulses provided by nerves stimulate the immune system, speed the production of stress hormones, the circulation and digestion, blood flow, and decrease pain sensitivity.
