Most exercises of these schools were created by those masters of Gi gong, which were masters of martial arts simultaneously.

 Medical Gi gong
This type of Gi gong was created mainly by healers. The special exercises were developed for the improvement of circulation of Gi (energies) in the concrete ducting (meridians) for recovery from the disease.

 Philosophical Gi gong
Directions of this type of Gi gong were developed by scientists - philosophers, and their basic task was the maintenance of health. They work on providing emotionally - neutral, healthy psyche and smooth circulation of Gi (energies), that allows neutrally (quietly, without superfluous emotions) to think of different problems. This type of Gi gong is useful for people, which are engaged in the prediction for "Yi Ching", or engaged in the analysis (financial, analytical, sociological and etc). Almost all great Chinese war-lords owned this practice of Gi gong, and the emperors of China had a sage - analytic, which belonged to this school.

 Religious Gi gong
This type of Gi gong was developed by the monks of Buddhist and Dao religious orientation.  The initial task was to get the state of brightening, the state of Buddha or great Emptiness. In these schools the special techniques were developed in longevity. Many monks did not have time to attain the state of brightening due to the limitation of released them time of life on earth and they died, not attaining it. The special techniques were developed for the extension of life, a monk decided now, when his soul must go to the eternity.
Further more these techniques went out from religious Gi gong and became independent. Presently they belong to none of religions.

In general, these divisions on schools and directions are conditional, so, for example, masters of martial arts study medical Gi ging for the trauma therapy, and when achieve the success in martial art direction, begin to understand spiritual Gi gong.
