Alpha-lipoic acid (ALA, also known as lipoic acid or thioctic acid) is a chemical with the same influence on the body as a vitamin. It is an antioxidant--a substance that prevents cell damage caused by substances known as free radicals. During oxidative stress high levels of blood glucose appear. ALA is available either in such kinds of foods as liver, spinach, broccoli, and potatoes or it can be made in the laboratory in the form of tablets or capsules. ALA has a beneficial effect on the body because of its antioxidant activity. The beneficial effect of ALA on type 2 diabetes and obesity is insignificant. The positive influence is glucose uptake in muscle; sensitivity of the body to insulin; diabetic neuropathy; and/or weight loss. Side effects and possible risks. ALA is quite safe for the general adult population, but those who suffer from diabetes should remember that ALA might reduce blood sugar significantly, so their blood sugar level should be monitored carefully. ALA may also reduce blood levels of minerals, such as iron; it interacts with such medicines, as antacids; and reduces the effectiveness of some anti-cancer drugs. Among other possible side effects of ALA there are headache, skin rash, and stomach upset.
Chromium is known as a metal and an essential trace mineral. It is available in some foods, such as meat, animal fats, fish, brown sugar, coffee, tea, some spices, whole-wheat and rye breads, and brewer's yeast. It is found in capsules and tablets and is available as chromium picolinate, chromium chloride, and chromium nicotinate. The beneficial influence of chromium on the human body and their use or need by persons with diabetes is controversial. It is quite difficult to determine, whether a person suffers from a chromium deficiency and his need for chromium supplements. Side effects and other risks. Low doses and short-term apply of chromium is quite safe for adults. One should remember that chromium has the same effect on blood sugar as insulin; it can lead to the blood sugar’s increase. Possible side effects while applying low doses are weight gain, headache, insomnia, skin irritation, sleep problems, and mood changes. High doses can lead to serious side effects. People who suffer from diabetes and apply chromium can have the developed kidney problems. Among other possible effects there are vomiting, diarrhea, bleeding into the gastrointestinal tract, and worsening of any behavioral or psychiatric problems.
Coenzyme Q10, known as CoQ10 or ubiquinone (ubiquinol) is a vitamin-like substance that is used to promote the production of energy by cells. It is known as an antioxidant too. CoQ10 is available in insignificant quantities in meats and seafood. Supplements with CoQ10 are available in the form of tablets and capsules. The influence of CoQ10 on diabetes type 2 and CoQ10's effectiveness as a CAM therapy have been researching. It does not affect blood glucose control. Theoretically, it can be applied against heart illness in people with diabetes, but practically its effectiveness is not proved jet. Side effects and other risks. CoQ10 is quite safe for most of people. It may interact with some medicines such as warfarin (a blood thinner) and medicines used for high blood pressure or cancer chemotherapy. Among other possible effects there are nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, loss of appetite, and heartburn.
